"Can we do Coiba with our kids?" is one of the questions parents ask us most — usually with a mix of excitement and worry. The short answer: yes, and families are some of our happiest guests. Here's the honest, practical guide.
Is it safe for children?
Safety is built into how we run every tour: every guest wears a life vest (all sizes, including kids'), our certified guides stay close in the water, and we choose calm, shallow reefs when children are aboard. Kids don't need to know how to swim to float and watch the fish — many of our youngest snorkelers hold a guide's hand the whole time.
Kids 12 and under: free park entry
A nice surprise for the family budget: children 12 and under don't pay the Coiba park entrance fee. The tour price is $65 per person, and the park fee ($20 foreigners / $5 Panamanians) applies only from age 13.
What kids love most
- The dolphins that race the boat on the crossing — pure magic at any age.
- Spotting their first turtle — expect screams of joy through the snorkel.
- The beach time at Ranchería Island: shallow, calm, perfect for sandcastles while parents relax.
- The "shark story" they'll tell at school — whitetip reef sharks are completely harmless and rest on the sand.
Practical tips from our crew
- Best ages: from about 5–6 years kids enjoy the full day; younger children are welcome too — tell us their ages when booking so we prep the right vests.
- Seasickness: the morning crossing is usually smooth, but if your child is sensitive, a kids' motion-sickness tablet before departure helps.
- Sun: rash guard + hat + reef-safe sunscreen beats reapplying cream all day.
- Snacks: lunch and fruit are included, but a familiar snack never hurts.
